Donna's journey began in Sheffield, Alabama, where she worked as a session singer prior to 1970. She recorded with Boz Scaggs, Duane Allman, Cher, Joe Tex, and Neil Diamond. She moved to California and married Keith Godchaux in 1970. In September 1971, she introduced Keith to Jerry Garcia after a performance at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco. Donna officially joined the Grateful Dead in March 1972, remaining until February 1979. During their tenure, the couple released the self-written album Keith & Donna in 1975, featuring Garcia as a member of the Keith and Donna Band. From January 26, 1976, through November 3, 1978, they played 146 nights with the Jerry Garcia Band alongside John Kahn and Ron Tutt. In a 2014 Rolling Stone interview, she explained their departure: "Keith and I, we were wasted. We were exhausted. And the band was exhausted with us... It was sad, but it was what needed to happen." Following Keith's death in 1980, she married David MacKay and moved back to Florence to record at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.

In Their Own Story

The transition from Muscle Shoals session work to the Grateful Dead was a pivotal shift for Donna. After introducing Keith to Garcia at the Keystone Korner in September 1971, she joined the band while not yet working as a musician professionally. Her time with the Dead saw her provide both backing and lead vocals across six studio albums: Europe '72 (1972), Wake of the Flood (1973), From the Mars Hotel (1974), Blues for Allah (1975), Terrapin Station (1977), and Shakedown Street (1978). The couple also toured extensively with the Jerry Garcia Band, logging 146 performances between early 1976 and late 1978. However, by February 1979, exhaustion set in on both sides. Donna later recalled that the situation was "turning into being not profitable for anybody," leading to a mutual agreement that they had to leave. After Keith passed away in 1980, she married David MacKay and remained in Florence until her death in November 2025. In 2006, she revived her musical career by forming Kettle Joe's Psychadelic Swamp Revue with Jeff Mattson and Mookie Siegel, later renaming it the Donna Jean Godchaux Band in 2009.
