Duke Leto Atreides serves as the planetary governor of Caladan before accepting a trap set by Emperor Shaddam IV to take control of spice mining on Arrakis. Aware of the danger but unable to refuse, Leto seeks an alliance with the native Fremen, recognizing them as an untapped resource. He travels with his concubine Jessica and heir Paul. The Harkonnens, secretly backed by the Emperor's Sardaukar warriors and aided by traitorous Suk doctor Wellington Yueh, launch a devastating attack that kills Leto and scatters House Atreides forces. Paul and Jessica flee into the desert, where they are taken in by the Fremen. Paul utilizes his prescient abilities, unlocked by spice exposure, to lead the Fremen against the Imperial stranglehold, eventually seizing Arrakis and deposing Shaddam IV. In Dune Messiah, Paul is blinded by a stone burner and exiles himself into the desert; he later returns as 'The Preacher' in Children of Dune before his assassination.

In Their Own Story

Lady Jessica, instructed by the Bene Gesserit to conceive a daughter for their breeding program, disobeyed out of love and gave Leto a son, Paul. This decision alters the fate of the universe. Pregnant with their second child, Alia, Jessica flees into the desert with Paul as House Atreides is destroyed. She undergoes the Fremen spice agony ritual while pregnant, becoming a Reverend Mother and unlocking Other Memory, but this subjects unborn Alia to heightened awareness she cannot handle. In Children of Dune, Jessica returns to Arrakis and discovers that Alia, serving as regent for Paul's twins Leto II and Ghanima, has succumbed to possession. She escapes an assassination attempt by Alia and trains Farad'n, the grandson of Shaddam IV, in Bene Gesserit disciplines. The house's legacy continues through these descendants across millennia.
