Lore & Background

In 2015, Thanos arrived on Nidavellir and forced the Dwarves to forge the Infinity Gauntlet specifically to hold all six Stones. He planned to collect them himself to achieve his goal of wiping out half of all life. The Gauntlet became operational during the events of 2018 when Thanos used it to defeat the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. After acquiring the Mind Stone from Vision in Wakanda, he possessed all six stones within the glove. Despite being impaled in the chest by Thor's axe, Stormbreaker, Thanos managed to use the Gauntlet to snap his fingers, successfully decimating half of all life in an event known as the Decimation.

In Their Own Story

Following the Decimation, Thanos teleported to the Garden and destroyed the Stones with the Gauntlet still on his hand to prevent their further use. Twenty-three days later, surviving Avengers ambushed him, but he revealed the stones were gone. Five years later in 2023, an alternate version of Thanos from 2014 traveled through time after learning of the Blip via 2014-Nebula's cybernetic implants. He arrived at the Avengers Compound and engaged Stark, Rogers, and Thor in battle. During this conflict, Thanos obtained the Stark Nano Gauntlet containing the stones, but Tony Stark tricked him by removing the stones and attaching them to his own suit. Stark then snapped his fingers, turning Thanos and his entire army to dust.

Reader's Guide

The Infinity Gauntlet requires all six Infinity Stones to function as a universal weapon. In the MCU narrative, obtaining these gems involved specific actions: retrieving the Space Stone from the Tesseract in 2012 (via Loki), securing the Power Stone by defeating Ronan in 2014, acquiring the Reality Stone on Knowhere, and sacrificing Gamora on Vormir for the Soul Stone. The final piece, the Mind Stone, was taken from Vision in Wakanda. Once assembled, the Gauntlet allowed the wielder to alter reality instantly. However, using its full power came with severe physical consequences, as seen when Thor's axe nearly killed Thanos immediately after he snapped his fingers.
